Gravy Au'jus

Women want him, fish fear him, most likely since he's ready to find out how many kinds of fish and chips he can make. This is a threat and a warning to all of Eorzea's local fish population.

Backstory

As a kit raised in the Golmore Jungle, Gravy was already waiting for his turn as Wood-warder. He was close with his fellow kits and yearned to be able to defend them, often playing the protective knight in pretend games. When the time came for his rite of passage, he succeeded by the skin of his teeth, bloodied and bruised but alive, hauling at least a couple of his fellow to-be Wood-warders past the finish line to join him in victory. They later were separated to train under different mentors, at least Gravy was told, but never kept in touch since.Whispers amongst the Wood-warders met his ears- there was a remarkable beast during this batch’s initiation. Gravy asked if it had been taken down, and they did not reply. He was assigned to a senior Wood-warder who was cold but patient beyond his years. A lot of the training involved control, which he greatly struggled with, but he was determined to meet the man’s approval, and to gain the strength to protect the tribe.Gravy was out in the forest training alone when an Imperial legion attacked, and brute forced their way towards one of the tribe settlements. The sight of his home burning under siege caused a rage to well up within him, and disregarded all of his training to fell enough of the legion to cause a retreat. Despite this, he had not calmed from his rampage until his mentor knocked him out.He later woke, restrained and confused, to him being exiled from the tribe, seen as too much of a danger to the jungle and the safety of those who resided within. His mentor could only provide him enough supplies and gil to travel, a kindness that Gravy took to heart as he traveled across the sea to Vylbrand, where he heard tales of a similar predicament, where his inner beast could be tamed to protect rather than destroy. On his travels across La Noscea, he trained under the Marauder’s Guild and subsequently joined the warriors, while also slowly climbing the ranks in the Maelstrom in his bid to prove to himself and others that he could protect those he cares about. He joined Shoppe after meeting with Chanmouny, and is the cafe's chef, resident fish enthusiast, and extra muscle should his skills be required.

Hooks

  • As a member of Shoppe’s kitchen staff, he’s always experimenting on new flavors to put on the cafe’s menu. Even if that might be some other variation of battered foods and chips. A second opinion is always appreciated! Or maybe you have a special request?

  • Even if he’s considered to be an experienced warrior, he’s open to challenging his skills to hone them. If you have a monster that needs slaying, his axe is yours. So long as you don't mind him wondering how to cook said monster.

  • Estranged from the Wood, Gravy has sore memories of his time training as a Warder but always finds comfort in meeting other Rava and sharing experiences he usually doesn't find many to relate with. If you run into him as a Rava, expect that he has plenty to say.

  • When not busy with the cafe, he can be frequently found around Limsa, either at Maelstrom command or the Marauder's Guild, polishing his skills or just keeping himself busy with company.

  • For plenty of reasons, Gravy has set up a tavern in Shirogane, where he serves his signature fish 'n chips as well as some ale he'd brought with him from Vylbrand. He welcomes locals and travelers alike, and enjoys striking up conversation with them.

Connections

Viola (hunting hawk)
A hawk that had been entrusted into his care by his mentor in the Wood. Where Gravy goes, she's not usually far behind, either hovering near him or sneaking a bite at some bread he made the mistake of leaving out.
L'ari Frey
A trusted friend and occasional confidant. They met ten years ago, with Gravy having run into some trouble in with the Sekiseigumi while attempting to bargain for passage to Limsa. With L'ari's assistance and company, Gravy was able to reach Vylbrand. Nowadays, Gravy often cooks for him (since L'ari eats for function, not taste) to let him try new flavors, while L'ari is particular about teas and shares Doman cookies with him. Gravy lets him work or relax in his kitchen, and in turn, L'ari lets Gravy lounge in his library. Gravy is extremely protective of him due to recent events within the Free Company.
Cesaj Salad
Once Gravy's retainer, Cesaj was inspired and encouraged to travel and adventure. Gravy trusts him wholeheartedly.
Lann Verano
Their first meeting had not gone so well, with Lann having been stealing L'ari's supplies and Gravy catching him in the act, causing the viera to pin him against the wall and nearly choke him to death. Nowadays, Gravy is relaxed around him and entrusts the kitchen to Lann when he's away. Often gives Lann bread and other pastries.
Chanmouny Sanmouny
Colleague, friend, and boss from Shoppe cafe. It was from Chan that Gravy was inspired (and enabled) to experiment on different kinds of battered fish and chips. He calls him "Boss" fondly, and will not hesitate to protect the lalafell, and the cafe, from harm.
Arkhail Djt-setlas
A good friend and colleague Gravy met while on a fishing excursion, and somehow ended at the same FC lot in the Mist. They adventure together with the other FC members on occasion.
Tha'ella Belladona
Colleague and friend Gravy met through Shoppe. As a fellow warrior he respects her deeply. He finds her a little intimidating, but not threatening.
Vare Windwalker
A fellow viera to whom he owes much of his new life in Eorzea. They ran into each other and ventured to Eorzea together after freshly leaving the Wood.

Cesaj Salad

WIPClan: The LostAge: 35Appearance: BEEF!!! Above average height for a Hrothgar, blue-gray fur with a coral mane that refuses to stay down, and magenta markings. Blue-green eyes, and what constitutes as a moustache.Personality: Quiet, but expresses himself and extends support loudly. Gives great hugs and is a huge cuddler. The chill uncle.Strengths: competent healer, reassuring, can eat literally anythingWeaknesses: sometimes absentminded, easily distracted, prone to seasicknessQuirks: somehow always hungry, will hand out saladsLikes: the sea, making salads to give out, taking care of his buddies, airships, travelingDislikes: the way the sea moves around the boat does it really have to do that, having no food in his pocketsBackstory: WIP!
Cesaj was brought up in a nomadic clan with no real sense of what home meant other than the family around him. Eventually he left to travel on his own, and when simply being a mercenary wasn't enough to sustain his travels, he took to being a retainer for a time to have the stability while also allowing him to travel, within orders, obviously. He had been under Gravy's employ for a while, and once having tended to his wounds, Gravy suggested for Cesaj to try out adventuring again.

L'ari Frey

Clan: Keeper of the Moon (but given a Seeker name by his father)Age: 42Appearance: Above average height for a miqo’te (172cm), shoulder length light turquoise hair tied up in a messy ponytail with faint magenta tips, a perpetual frown, silver right eye, and pink left eye.Personality: Stern, stoic, serious, will tell you we have food at home when spotting a Mcdonald’s Drive-thruStrengths:Competent healer, focused, patient (with a limit)Weaknesses: Stubborn, fussy, low alcohol tolerance but won’t show itQuirks: Pronounces words by how he reads themLikes: Tea, mystery and thriller books, definitely totally not invested in the budding romance in the book he’s currently reading, cool weatherDislikes: Spoilers, coffee (but will have it ready for people who prefer it), hanging out in the sun

Backstory

A quiet kit raised reluctantly to be one of the hunters for his tribe in the Shroud, L’ari was one to shy away from the more social aspects of his family, preferring the company of books and the forest’s local birds. He was born to a Keeper mother, and an unknown father, who was barely spoken of and never met.On an inopportune day while hunting, an Imperial cohort came down upon L’ari and some of his fellow hunters, and being too slow to escape, he and a few others were taken and forcefully conscripted into the Garlean army.He spent numerous years there, given multiple names out of his stubbornness to surrender his Keeper name to them, to the point where he forsook his original name entirely so as not to bring shame and harm to his tribe, or rather, associate with the name the harm he was causing by following orders. He learned early on to just obey and swallow his resistance, and for many years had a crisis in identity, opting instead to essentially dissociate while on assignments. After many years serving under Imperial leadership, he was stationed in Hingashi, and was given the task to deal with a particular miqo’te informant and merchant who betrayed the Garlean’s trust. Upon confrontation with this enemy, he learned that it was his father, a Seeker who was revealed to have been doing business with the Garleans and using their resources to also provide the underground resistance some supplies. After a hard, confusing discussion and scuffle, L’ari was convinced to escape to Limsa Lominsa with him. They eventually established themselves with the local pirates, and L’ari, finally afforded time with his father, chose a new name, one suggested by his father. His hair longer and face more aged, he conducts business in his father’s stead in Hingashi and frequently ferries back and forth while also offering to train novice Sekiseigumi members in the art of the sword.Incidentally, he met Gravy ten years ago while off-duty in Kugane, while Gravy had been causing some commotion in the markets. L'ari accompanied him to Limsa, and have been friends ever since. Gravy convinced the miqo’te to visit his free company’s seaside cafe, where L’ari occasionally now offers some help to patch their members up, or some books to borrow during downtime.

Hooks

  • An avid reader in his downtime between healing sessions or accounting, L'ari's often found in Shoppe's cafe area either reading the latest non-fiction or history books. If you're quick, you might see the smaller book between the pages of the one he's supposedly reading...

  • Tired after adventuring or looking to patch a few scratches or bruises? L'ari will be around his office, sorting his books, but always has a spot on his couch to patch you up. You're welcome to the Ishgardian tea and Doman cookies, too, just don't get bloodstains on the books, please.

  • Despite his unsocial demeanor, L'ari prefers to work where some might come to eat, and has a spot almost always reserved for him in the corner of Gravy's balcony. He has his fingers against his temple and he's been rereading the same page over and over-- perhaps there's something on his mind?

Rae Kataribe
L'ari met Rae during one of his Sekiseigumi guard assignments, where Rae's dancing troupe was in Kugane for a performance. A scuffle ensued and the two fought surprisingly well side by side. Impressed by each others' skills, Rae asked for L'ari to train them in the art of the sword, while L'ari learns how to dance without stepping on his own toes.

Lann Verano

WIP
Worlds: Marilith, Dynamis | Sephirot, Materia
Clan: Hyur, MidlanderAge: 27Appearance: Often milling about alone and stuck in his own head, Lann stands below average height for a hyur, with lightly tanned skin and near white hair partly shaved while the rest long and pulled back in a messy bun. His sharp blue-green eyes contrast against the orange carnation earring that he wears like he expects to be buried with it.Personality: At first, polite, restrained, warms up easily but catches himself quickly. Silently chants Mcdonalds in the backseat. When more familiar, he's rowdier and will poke you about the Mcdonalds.Strengths: Strong, patient (to a fault), good listenerWeaknesses: Stubborn, passive-aggressively fussy about food, emotionally constipatedQuirks: Insists he doesn't believe in ghosts. Keeps a nightlight on at night anyway. Won't admit he has a big brother complex.Likes: Warm porridge prepared just the way he likes, barbecue, the beachDislikes: Heights, the tiny bits of onion that distract from the texture of his foodAt a glance:First impressions, he’s consciously polite and easily makes small conversation, though a keen eye would detect restraint in his expressions. He has stories to tell about his scars from learning not to chop his own head off with an axe on different pirate ships he’d served around La Noscea, though he tells of the one on his lip differently each time. He’s not used to traveling by air since heights seem to disagree with him, but he’ll readily grit his teeth and grip the rails of the ship in some kind of exposure therapy hoping it takes.Despite his intentionally distanced demeanor, the food he prepares tastes warm and familiar, reminiscent of a home long lost.

Backstory

Orphaned from a young age, Lann grew up in an orphanage in La Noscea, by a lighthouse overlooking the sea. A home as he knew it in every sense of the word, he opted to stay instead of leave when he was of age.The orphanage itself was managed by a small crew of retired ex-pirates who cared for orphans they picked up on their travels, and Lann was one of the first to be picked up. He viewed these ex-pirates as his own parental figures, and himself as an older sibling to the younger orphans, who he saw as family.Supplies came regularly from the ex-pirates’ old crew, often playing with the children before they left. Lann admired them for their charity, and listened raptly to their stories every time they visited. When he and some of the other orphans were older, they also assisted around the orphanage, from cooking to running errands in Limsa Lominsa and the occasional trip to Gridania or Ul’dah. It was on one of these trips that he and another orphan came back to find the orphanage on fire. None of the orphans had been seriously injured, but several of the ex-pirates lost their lives in the blaze, two of which were deliberately murdered. In the ashes of the orphanage it was evident that the place was ransacked, and Lann believes that it must’ve been the pirates’ old enemies who set their home ablaze. Leaving behind the orphanage, he met with pirates’ remaining crew and took his search to the sea, and subsequently the sky, with the small amount of clues he had to go on.What he would do once he found the perpetrators, he doesn’t know yet, but he'll cross that bridge when he gets there, assuming it doesn’t burn on the way.

Connections

Gravy Au'jus
The first time they met, Gravy nearly killed him. He tries to avoid the viera, but it’s a little impossible knowing he lives in Shoppe’s walls. That, and the guy keeps giving him bread.
Vare Windwalker
Menace. Lann owes him gil, mostly since Vare exploits his tendency to be a little touchy. 20,000 gil for a handshake, really?!
Fionn Soleil
Another menace in his life, but more unavoidable as a fellow wall rat in Shoppe. The viera tends to swipe ale from his collection to the point it’s easier to count his remaining inventory rather than what he lost.

Hooks

  • He can usually be found around La Noscea, taking odd jobs for gil and making under the table deals (not that he's a very good negotiator...) Perhaps you're looking for someone to do some dirty work for you? Lann isn't likely to refuse.

  • Lann will do anything for information regarding those responsible for burning down his childhood home. Maybe you've got something, or know someone. Or maybe you were an ex-Reaver.

  • When Gravy's not at Shoppe Cafe, Lann takes care of the kitchen, so he'll be behind the counter. Feel free to annoy him.

R18One thing’s for sure, Gravy’s thick in both physique and in the skull. If one will try to win over him with advances, they’ll need to be as obvious as a pommel to the head, which he will inflict to anyone whose advances he doesn’t appreciate. That being said, he’s usually more receptive to a gentle touch that borders on, or pushes towards, the edge of direct. As capable a warrior Gravy is, he’s very easily turned to mush with the right approach, be that through some teasing contact through sparring, pinning him to the wall with a thigh between his legs, or even just a grab at the nape of his neck. It’s easy to assume during a scene that he’s too far gone to think about what’s being done to him, but rest assured, if he isn’t grabbing for his axe, you’re headed in the right direction.Physical
